summer

hanging lamps

yesterday was classic summer in downtown portland. i got up around nine o'clock and putzed around until close to eleven, when i set off with my camera for the farmer's market.

i was hoping for some practice photography before i head off to ecuador. i want to get some good shots when we go to the otavalo indian market, and the local farmer's market seems like the best place for that. i looked for the most colorful things i could find, which ended up being flowers and veggies.

but just beyond the farmer's market was the annual iranian festival. since it was free i took a stroll through. $13 and about an hour later i left with a new little purse, a bottle of rosewater and some more good shots. (you can check out the rest of the day's pics here.)

after a chat with a classy old lady in the park i came home for a nap before kathleen came over. we were planning to go to a brazilian festival in southeast portland, but we both felt mellow and decided to go hear jazz instead. but jimmy mak's was full, so we wandered through powell's and then settled in to a café a couple blocks away for gelato and chit-chat. all in all it was a lovely day.

a surprised kathleen
